Municipal Planning Commission

The Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) is a Council Committee established by Bylaw 25/020 and acknowledged within the Municipal Government Act (MGA) to oversee land use planning and development within Clearwater County. Its primary mandate is to ensure that land development aligns with the County's Land Use Bylaw, Municipal Development Plan, and other relevant policies, thereby promoting orderly and sustainable growth.

Meetings are tentatively scheduled on the third Wednesday of every month.

MPC is responsible for:

  • Development Permit Approvals: Reviewing and approving applications for development permits, ensuring compliance with zoning regulations.
  • Subdivision Applications: Assessing and making recommendations on subdivision proposals to ensure they meet planning standards.
  • Policy Implementation: Implementing land use policies and providing recommendations for amendments to the Land Use Bylaw and Municipal Development Plan.
  • Advisory Role: Advising Council on planning and development issues, providing expert insights to inform decision-making.

Members of the MPC should possess:

  • Knowledge of Planning Principles: Understanding of land use planning, zoning laws, and development processes.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to assess development proposals and their impact on the community.
  • Commitment to Community: Dedication to promoting sustainable and beneficial development for all residents.
  • Impartiality: Capacity to make decisions based on policies and facts, without personal bias.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to engage with the public and stakeholders effectively.

A member of the Commission shall not include: 

  • a development officer;
  • a member of the Subdivision and Development Appeal Board;
  • an employee of the County.

Public Member Appointments 

Each year, Council holds an Organizational meeting in October to designate their memberships on boards as well as to elect members-at-large to represent the community on select boards. Last year the Organizational meeting took place on Monday October 25, 2022.
